Maui's Makena Golf Course is a championship Robert Trent Jones Jr. design with Pacific Ocean and mountain views amidst volcanic rock.

Opened in 1993, Makena Golf Course in Maui's southern region is a championship Robert Trent Jones Jr. design. The course navigates around Hawaiian lava rock walls, natural streams and gullies with views of the Pacific Ocean and mountains at many points. There are four sets of tees, the championship set playing to 7,038 yards. Makena's signature 14th hole is a par 5 that plays 620 yards long, second longest in Hawaii, but downhill the whole way.

Played Makena last week. Course is in poor condition. Greens are shaggy. Bunkers unraked. Fairways are suffering from lack of maintenance and have lots of bare spots. It's still one of the prettiest layouts in the state and it's worth playing--once. I did not play it twice as there are just too many better options on Maui these days.

Good to see this course getting resources put into it: new carts, irrigation, clubhouse, etc. A lot of fun holes, plays way more up-and-down than next door Wailea. A few dynamite holes, like the 12th and 14th among others.

I found the course to be very challenging and the views were spectacular.However the course condition does not compare to the Waialea Emerald course.So for the few extra dollars I would play it.

Also the gentlemen working the pro shop the day we we golfed was awful arrogant

Easily my favorite course on Maui.

Unbelievable ocean views, challenging holes, no gimmicks,natural contours, good maintenance,and the complete absence of the horrific winds that plague most of the other quality Maui courses all add up to a fun outing. And it is far more affordable than any other quality Maui course, particularly through Hawaii Golf Deals.

Play somewhere else. Elleair is my favorite. Makena used to be great, but they closed the South course and they don't maintain the North.

Played twilight yesterday ... Awesome views, terrific course conditions, true test of golf, pace was slow. Played Makena and Kapalua Plantation in 2005 on my last visit ... Makena is a better course in my opinion ... No gimmicks just pure golf. Ownership turmoil (foreclosure, auction) had me worried this time but I had a wonderful time.

I played this course last year, and the year before (Ocean) It is really a nice course. Challenging, but great fairways to work with and stunning views. You could eat off the the greens.

The staff is incredible! Last year when I came in they had ice cold mango scented towels waiting. A great touch to finish a great round. I will be back in 2 weeks, first tee time the morning after I arrive. I can hardly wait!

Played this course mid-week,
mid-morning in early May last year. Was allowed to play alone. Loved the layout from the middle tees. Greens are sizeable with many pin placements. Tee shots set up for a variety of shot shapes
and are very generous. Wind was not a factor. I played Kapalua Plantation and Wailea
Gold and this was my most enjoyable round. Conditions only slightly below Wailea Gold. Friendly Staff. Can't wait to go back.

Awesome course... not extremely challenging for the serious golfers but challenging enough for the weekenders...
Extremely nice staff and views of the ocean that can't be described unless you see them for yourself, pictures just don't do it justice. If your staying in the Wailea area, this is a must.
